The Old Gas Works is a design and build, mixed tenure development comprising twenty four, three storey, one bedroom apartments and eight, three bed, shared ownership houses.
All properties are primarily constructed utilising a timber frame package which is then clad in either traditional brickwork or a cementitious reproduction timber cladding system.
As the name suggests the development was built on a former gas works site in the market town of Frome, Somerset. Construction on this development has proven challenging given that access to the development has been difficult, the ground was heavily contaminated, the site is directly adjacent to a live railway line and the existing buildings were home to a colony of rare bats.
Works undertaken included the construction of houses, apartments, roads and sewers along with more specialist installations such as surface water attenuation facilities beneath all parking areas and roads. This would allow a controlled discharge of rain water in to the adjacent river, preventing any additional surcharge to the water course which in turn would assist in preventing future flooding further downstream. Due to the proximity of the live railway line it was incumbent on us to ensure high levels of acoustic resistivity to both the building structure as well as the mechanical and ventilation elements of the building. Furthermore each property has been constructed in accordance with the Code for Sustainable Homes.
This development is another example of Nobles Construction’s continued expansion throughout the UK delivering a high quality purpose made product.
